This is Dr. McMullin. He is a primary care physician at Shasta Community Health Center. This man spends his day off every week searching the streets and woods for homeless people who need medical care. I have had the opportunity to shadow him and his team several times and have been profoundly moved by their work.
Over the past few months, I have seen Dr. McMullin look dozens of homeless people in the eye and ask them if they need medical care. I have watched as hardened people soften in his presence. He knocks on dilapidated tents and asks if he should remove his shoes before entering. Once I saw him lift an immobilized urine soaked man into a truck without once flinching. On another occasion, I watched as he tenderly peeled bits of rotting bandages and skin from a man's scabbed feet with as much reverence as if he were caring for a king. This man is compassion personified.
Next week Dr. McMullin and I will be launching a housing subsidy program called Bridges to Housing. We will be collecting your donations to get our most vulnerable homeless residents off of the streets and directly into housing. Our city desperately needs this. And we are going to need you.
There are 3 things you can do TODAY to help us prepare for our launch next week:
1) Visit the People of Redding Facebook page and select “All Posts” under Notifications. Then select "See First." This will ensure that you don't miss any announcements or updates.
2) Invite your friends to follow People of Redding. Our social media following will be an integral part of making this a success.
3) Continue interacting with our posts. Facebook automatically assigns public pages a very low priority. The more you like, comment and share a post, the more people will see it.
Thank you for your ongoing support! I have been touched by your compassion time and time again. We're going to do a good thing!
