Introducing BRIDGES TO HOUSING!

December 8, 2016

Today is the day! We are so excited to tell you all about our new nonprofit, Bridges to Housing!

This is Barbara. Barbara is 73 years old. She lived under the Cypress bridge for 20 years. Dr. McMullin found her when he was doing outreach one day, and a group of homeless people led him to her and begged him to help her. “She can't stay here anymore. You've got to get her out of here,” they begged.

Barbara was in bad shape, but had no place to go. She had a small fixed income that wasn't enough to cover a month of rent, and the HUD housing wait list can take years. She was stuck.

Dr. McMullin had an idea. He pooled together enough money to cover 30% of Barbara's rent. (About $300.) He got Barbara set up with caseworkers who check on her a couple of times a week. He made sure she was on the wait list for HUD housing.

I am so happy to report that Barbara has stayed housed for 9 months! Her frail frame has finally started to put on weight! Her body is healing! Her caseworkers are teaching her how to budget, and teaching her other valuable life skills that she's never learned before.

Barbara is the inspiration behind Bridges to Housing. We believe this model works. We are on a mission to find more medically fragile people who desperately need to get off the street but need temporary monthly assistance until they qualify for affordable housing.

How many people we are able to house is completely up to you. We have no big grants or corporate sponsors. Your generous donations will make this possible.

We have set an ambitious goal of raising $20,000 by Sunday night.

I know this is a tall order, but we think it's possible. You've overwhelmed us with support in the past, and I think you'll come through again!

I think all of us would like to send a very clear message that we as a community are ready for solutions. Our hearts have been pricked, and we will answer the call, and all of Redding will be better for it.

WE NEED YOU! THERE ARE THREE WAYS TO HELP

1// DONATING IS EASY!

The United Way as agreed to be our fiscal sponsor, which means all of your donations will be tax deductible.

There are three ways to donate!

Text BRIDGESREDDING to 40403.

OR, click the DONATE button at the top of this page.

OR, visit our website at reddingbridgestohousing.org to read more about our plan and click on the DONATE NOW button.

2// MONTHLY DONATIONS. There is an option to donate monthly. We are going to need to establish a steady stream of revenue in order to house people, so the monthly donation will be a key component of our operation. The suggested monthly donation amount is $20, but larger or smaller amounts are encouraged at well. :)

3// SHARE. Pease share this post! And once you've donated, share this post letting your friends know that you've donated. Tag friends who you think would be interested in donating as well. We are going to need a lot of hep in getting the word out!

We will keep you updated on your progress! Keep checking back for updates!
